"Res cogitans" was born from the need to tell a part of me: the search for stillness and the importance of being alone with my thoughts, in isolated places. That's because I believe it's important to achieve good self-awareness in order to live in peace with yourself and with the world.
The title is inspired by Descartes' philosophical thought "cogito ergo sum", in which he divides man into two parts: the body and the mind. The "res cogitans" is precisely the thinking part.

To do this, I decided to appeal to the man-nature relationship, a very common theme in the art world since ancient times. Sometimes it's idyllic, the human feels part of a whole that he understands and respects. But it's also conflictual, when man feels threatened by nature, which he exploits, which he damages.
This relationship has often been addressed by artists, with different themes and approaches depending on the historical period, who have always analyzed this dualism of feelings that leads man to love nature, but also to never fully understand it.
Art therefore stands as an expression of beauty, capable of arousing emotion, conveying messages stronger than many researches and which have the power to bring us back to the essence of things.
This relationship has often been addressed by artists, with different themes and approaches depending on the historical period, who have always analyzed this dualism of feelings that leads man to love nature, but also to never fully understand it.
Art therefore stands as an expression of beauty, capable of arousing emotion, conveying messages stronger than many researches and which have the power to bring us back to the essence of things.
To represent this concept, I decided to produce nude images. To do this, I asked my friend Fabiana to pose for me and she gladly accepted. We have been to various points on the banks of river Po, because they are secluded places where a person can think in peace, but which are located in the chaos of the Turin metropolis, our city.
Over the months, we have been to places chosen by me, but also by her; so we realized that we both have the same need.
We always went to shoot in the morning, to prevent people from seeing us and being reported to the police for obscene acts in public place.
To present the final work, I imagine a small book that opens like an accordion which, when opened, appears as a horizontal sequence, as if it were an intimate narrative.

The final work looks like a small leporello, you can browse it normally or see the sequence of images horizontally. Hand-bound, the prints are on 100% fine art cotton paper, to keep them as good as possible over time. I wanted to create a precious and unique object, like the intimacy we have with ourselves.
"Res cogitans" nasce dall'esigenza di raccontare una parte di me: la ricerca della tranquillità e l'importanza di stare da sola con i miei pensieri, in luoghi isolati. Questo perchè credo che sia importante raggiungere una buona consapevolezza di sé per vivere in pace con se stessi e con il mondo. Il titolo si ispira al pensiero filosofico di Cartesio "cogito ergo sum", nel quale divide l'uomo in due parti: il corpo e la mente. La "res cogitans" è appunto, la parte pensante.
Per farlo, ho deciso di appellarmi al rapporto uomo-natura, un tema molto comune nel mondo dell'arte sin dall'antichità. È a tratti idilliaco, con l’essere umano che si sente parte di un tutto che comprende e rispetta. Ma è anche conflittuale, con l’uomo che si sente minacciato dalla natura, che sfrutta, che danneggia. Questo rapporto è stato affrontato spesso dagli artisti, con tematiche e approcci diversi a seconda del periodo storico, che hanno sempre analizzato questo dualismo di sentimenti che porta l’uomo ad amare la natura, ma anche a non comprenderla mai fino in fondo.
L’ate si pone quindi come espressione di bellezza, capace di suscitare emozione, veicolare messaggi più forti di molte ricerche e che hanno il potere di riportarci all’essenza delle cose.

Per rappresentare questo concetto, ho deciso di produrre immagini di nudo. Per farlo, ho chiesto alla mia amica Fabiana di posare per me e lei ha accettato molto volentieri. Siamo state su diversi punti delle rive del fiume Po, perchè sono dei luoghi appartati in cui si può pensare in pace, ma che sono situati nel caos della metropoli di Torino, la nostra città. Nel corso dei mesi, siamo state in luoghi scelti da me, ma anche da lei; così ci siamo accorte che entrambe avevamo lo stesso bisogno di solitudine. Siamo andate a scattare sempre la mattina, per evitare che le persone potessero vederci ed essere denunciate alla polizia per atti osceni in luogo pubblico.
L'opera finale è un piccolo leporello, che si sfoglia normalmente o che si può aprire e vedere la sequenza di immagini in orizzontale. Rilegato a mano, le stampe sono su carta cotone 100% fine art, per mantenerle al meglio nel tempo. Volevo creare un oggetto prezioso e unico, come lo è l'intimità che abbiamo con noi stessi.
